A Shoutout to the Newest #Education Editor:... →
I’m pretty excited about this opportunity. I truly enjoy using Tumblr to post my adventures in Education and reblogging posts that would be of interest to fellow educators. The #Education tag has been helpful for me, personally, as an educator so I hope to share posts that will help others. Thanks for the opportunity Tumblr! world-shaker: Welcome aboard!

Tin can container Raffle
Paintbrushdrive asked me about the tin can container idea in my recent Tumblr post. I don’t know how to personally respond, so I figured to reply in this post. I like the element of surprise, so depending on the grade level (and my budget), the items in my tin cans will vary. You see, to get the students curious, keeping surprise raffle prizes in a container they can not see makes them...

URBAN.LEARNING: Teaching Takes Courage →
Teaching DOES take courage… urbanlearning: I saw this great image today from www.workisnotajob.com. They put together some great stuff. Today’s image was just perfect for teaching… “Take Courage” against a chalkboard. Why does teaching take so much courage? I’ll share my thoughts and hope to hear yours. 1. Teaching takes courage…

Another Adventure in Substitute Teaching
Today went well. My only complaint is having first period as the prep period. I show up on-time, as scheduled (7:20AM) only to find out my first class was not until 9:14AM. I guess I should not complain. It gave me the opportunity to pre-read the story from the day’s lesson plan (Mark Twain’s The Californian’s Tale) so I can bring up discussion questions. The teacher had...

Myths vs. Realities about Women and Heart Disease... →
At the age of 31, almost a little over a year ago, I was diagnosed with a type of Cardiomyopathy, heart muscle disease. I’m still here. And, I’m teaching! Get educated with some information from Go For Red, part of the American Heart Association and learn how to prevent heart disease.

DAY 16: The Adventure ends...
My Adventure in Substitute Teaching has ended…well, at least my 16 day consecutive run with the same class, same students, at the same high school. Today was not only my last, but it was also a Minimum Day (students are dismissed at noon), class are roughly thirty-minutes, student attendance becomes less and less throughout the day, and it’s the beginning of Spring Break. California...

WANTS: Student vs. District
ME: The district has found a teacher to officially take over this classroom, so my days of teaching ends this week...the district decided what you need and what you want and...
STUDENT: Please! The District thinks they know what we need, but they never care about what we want...

DAY 15: When one Adventure ends, another one...
Today I let the students know that I will not be returning after Spring Break. I was met with jeers, cheers, and “MAN! What the f…?!” The last one was the main response of fellow teachers. I came into this job knowing a few things: on paper, I am replaceable; someone with a credential will always “bump” me, it is my responsibility to teach when a lesson plan is not...

DAY 14: Adventures in Substitute Teaching (Moving...
Yes, it is true. We are on Day 2 of the CAHSEE. Less students, and more cookies for each of my classes. I decided to give my students Oreo Cookies to commemorate the 100th Birthday of the Oreo Cookie. For my English 9th/10th grade classes I printed out an Oreo cookie fun fact sheet. It is a PDF file and I used it as an opportunity to show my students facts. Now, where do the Oreo cookies come...

DAY 13: Adventures in Substitute Teaching (CAHSEE...
Today is day one of CAHSEE (California High School Exit Examination). Students and teacher alike are likely to pronounce it like Cassie. To my understanding, 10th Graders take this exam and have up until their Senior year to pass the exam. To me, this means the classes I have that are a 9th/10th grade combo will be much smaller today (and much easier for me). AND.IT.WAS. Two of my class...

DAY 12: Adventures In Substitute Teaching
Today was a good day. I was called Mary Poppins. By a teacher. I will take it as a compliment. I had my students work on fact vs. opinion and some reading strategies. Two of my RSP English 9th/10th classes worked on fact and opinion. The other classes are Reading Enrichment classes and they studied some reading strategies I found on Pinterest. That was a little tough, should have known to teach...

DAY 11: Adventures in (I wish I took more...
With much consideration I realized that I am just one of the lucky few teachers who get the opportunity to substitute teach in a vacant position. Unfortunately I do not meet the requirements for an internship, at least not yet. And so I am lucky in the sense that I get to create the lesson plans as I go along in hopes that it will work. I decided I would not go to sleep worrying what to teach...

Continue to spread the word to end the word… positivelypersistentteach: Spread the word to end the word.   Don’t assume it’s fine to use that word, even if you don’t mean to make fun of people with disabilities.

DAY 10: Adventures in Substitute Teaching
First time in the computer lab with these students and we explore emailing attachments, online references, and Wordle. This is what one student came up with for the story we read in class by Robert D. San Souci titled “Sister Death and The Healer.” It was exhausting trying to teach all the students how to do all three, especially when some students are more savvy than others....

DAY 9: (More) Adventures in Substitute Teaching
Assessment testing days must be great for full-time teachers. The teacher gets to catch-up on things (or take the well-deserved break and venture on the internet) while the students stay in test-mode throughout the period. Then you have those students who complete their tests early and those who need the entire class period to complete it. Now, I imagine, had I been a full-time teacher with...

DAY 8: Adventures in Substitute Teaching
Reading Assessment Day. Last week I was informed that today I would be conducting a classroom reading assessment all day with each of my classes. My students may not like it, but they did it. I did not have any other lessons planned for today and knew that it would be a smooth day so long as I did not get any behavior problems. I prepared a referral slip *just in case…* Guess what?...

DAY 7: Adventures in Substitute Teaching
Yelling doesn’t solve anything, but it does create a warning. By today, Day 7: Friday, I have officially taught the same classroom for exactly 1 week and 1 day. This was also the first-day I have ever raised my voice to a class. I am sort of disappointed in myself. I know some of these students come from homes where they are yelled at often, and I know I am coming into a classroom...

DAYS 5 & 6: Adventures In Substitute Teaching
So far the week is going well. It has been a trial and error with the students. They only way I can assess their learning is to present lessons that should be like reviews for them. Unfortunately, what should be reviews are more like lessons for these students. I have two 9th/10th grade RSP English classes and review has not been consistent since their classroom teacher ended her contract...
